Can you be a Christian and live in disobedience to the Law?
Paul Leavens - Released from the Law - the written code?
Nobody ever has and no one ever will live in perfect obedience to the Old Testament Laws - ( Moses Law - the ten commandments - written code ). Only in Jesus Christ is there hope for perfection. You don’t keep the law to perfection, and I can’t. Nor does anyone we know. We have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and release from the Law.
“For if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” - (Galatians 2:21); “All who rely on observing the Law are under a curse,” - (Galatians 3:10); “Man is not justified by observing the Law, but by faith in Jesus Christ and not by observing the Law, because by observing the Law on one will be justified.” (Galatians 2:16); “Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the Law,” (Galatians 3:25); “You who are trying to be justified by Law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.” ( Galatians 5:4 ); “The entire Law is summed up in a single command: Love your neighbor as your-self.” ( Galatians 5:14 ). Romans 3:20 -- “No one will be declared righteous by observing the Law.”
Romans 10:4 -- “Christ is the end of the Law....”
Romans 7:1-4 -- We have been released from the Law....” My hope is not in keeping the Law. Nor do I need to keep - keeping the Law to be saved by Grace and Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 7:18 “The former regulation is set aside because it was week and useless for the law made nothing perfect.”
Hebrews 7:22 “Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.”
Hebrews 8:13 “By calling this covenant new, he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.”
Hebrews 10:1 “The Law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming - not the realities themselves.”
Hebrews 10:9 “He sets aside the first to establish the second.”
Hebrews 12:24 “Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant, ...”
Romans 3:24 “... we are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
Romans 6:14 “.... you are not under law, but under grace.”
Romans 7:6 “... we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.”
Romans 10: 4 “Christ is the end of the Law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.”
Don’t trust me or believe me? Look up these verses up for yourself!
You may be thinking, “Are you saying it is O.K. to murder, commit adultery; steal; give a false testimony; covet your neighbor’s wife and so on? Are you saying we can just throw the Ten Commandments away they are no longer relevant? No, that is not the point. Under the Old Covenant we were convicted that we are not prefect and we need a Savior. I did not steal from you and the others things mention in the Ten Commandments because I was told not too. Under the New Covenant of Grace - I don’t steal from you because I love you. We are no longer motived by guilt, but by love. We no longer go to the temple to visit God on the seventh day, because His Holy Spirit lives within us every day. We now have a seven day a week relationship with our Lord. As Hebrews Chapter four tells us there is a new, “Sabbath-rest for the people of God.”
Jeremiah foresaw the restoration of Israel after the captivity. His pictures of it were gentle and moving. But he did not see the return to the same kind of Theocracy or written code. To him, the Old Covenant with God and Moses was an utter failure. He understood God was to bring them back into the land, but he saw a new better covenant in store:
Jeremiah 31:33-34 Reads: The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Jacob. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, although I was a husband to them. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my law in their minds, and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, saying, “Know the Lord.” Because they will all know me, from the least to the greatest, declares the Lord, And I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. (Jer. 31:31-34)
“We have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.” (Romans 7:6)
“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations.....” (Ephesians 2:14-15)
Christians are not perfect just forgiven!
