Older adults are the backbone of the church. They are faithful and have served and sacrificed over a lifetime of support the church. Some of those same people now push walkers or rely on wheelchairs, face health challenges or have lost a spouse. It's easy in the busyness of every day life to pass by too fast to notice them. Make time to affirm their value and worth.
- Consider adopting a grandparent if your family lives out of town. Many seniors, who are also far away from their families, would love to be included in family outings and get-togethers.
- Invite someone who sits alone in church to sit with you. Some weekend, invite them to have lunch or dinner with you after church.
- Make sure the seniors you know have plans for holidays.
- Take time to learn about theIr needs: Perhaps they occasionally need someone to help with cleaning, home repairs. or transportation.
- Discover the wealth of information and knowledge most seniors possess.
- Offer to provide a ride to a special event at church for a senior who can no longer drive after dark.
- Take time to exchange phone numbers with a senior and call from time to time during the week to see how they're doing.
- Pray for them and with them.
- Be a listening ear: Ask about accomplishments as well as worries, joys, fears and challenges.
- Small things mean a lot. Spare a treat such as homemade cookies, tea a special coffee blend or a favorite book.
- Send a birthday card,.
- Most seniors ask for very little and are grateful for even the smallest consideratio
